WILD WATER LEMON - A CARNIVOROUS PASSION FRUIT?
GENUS PASSIFLORA FOETIDA

Passiflora foetida, variously known as Love-in-a-Mist, Stinking Passion Flower, Granadilla Colorada and Wild Water Lemon, , is a creeping vine which has small yellow to orange edible fruit and leaves that have a mildly rank aroma. It is native to northern South America and the West Indies.

A fast-growing vine, particularly in warm, wet, tropical regions it grow like most passion vines, although it can grow prostrate, forming a dense ground cover . The stems are thin, wiry and woody, covered with sticky yellow hairs. The leaves are three- to five-lobed and viscid-hairy. They give off an unpleasant odour when crushed. The flowers are white to pale pink, about 5-6 cm diameter. The fruit is globose, 2-3 cm diameter, yellowish-orange to red when ripe, and has numerous black seed embedded in the pulp; the fruit are eaten and the seeds dispersed by birds. It is edible and has a taste similar to other passion fruit bit ot has little pulp.

The bracts of this plant are known to serve as insect traps and also possess the mechanism to digest trapped insects. However, it is still uncertain as to whether the trap is solely for defence or if it is a true carnivorous plant in the sense that it digests and receives nutritional supplement from the insects it traps.

This passion flower tolerates arid ground, but favours wet areas. Hardy to temperatures of about -2*C.

BUT take care with this one - Passiflora foetida has now spread throughout the tropics in America, Asia, and the Pacific Islands where it is an invasive weed, although this risk seems not exist outside the tropics.


Propagation is usually from seeds although it can be grown from cuttings..
