NEW SOFTCOVER FLORIDA BOOK TITLE: PARROTS OF SOUTH FLORIDA. Written by Susan Allene Epps. Illustrated by Karl Karalus. Published (and presented here in new softcover) by Pineapple Press, Sarasota, FL, 2007. First Edition, First Printing. 95 pages, index and checklist,
references, list of food sources, full color illustrations.
CONTENTS: There is some noisy green bird in a South Florida neighborhood and based on its description, anyone who wants to know what it is, well, then, this full-color guide will help identify it. Included in this short but comprehensive guide are Amazons, conures, parakeets, macaws, and other parrots, some of which are rarely seen. You will find detailed information on each bird — its common name, its scientific name, and any other names by which it may be known; its size; a description of its colors and markings; and where it can be found. Each bird is illustrated in a painting by renowned bird artist Karl Karalus. Also included is a section on parrots’ preferred foods. The index of this marvelous little book can be used as a checklist so you can keep track of which parrots you have seen. This book documents a total of 32 different parrots and parakeets here in South Florida. The author began studying parrots when a pair of Amazons roosted in a tree across from her house.
She remembered seeing them every day and she said she was captivated. In fact, she got to the point where she paid even more attention and finally went and bought Parrots of the World and managed to identify a lot of the birds she saw. Then she began driving around town with the car windows rolled down, listening. When she heard the right sounds she would stop and find the birds that made them. She wanted to find out what they ate, so she took four plant identification classes at Broward Community College. She learned that some of the food that parrots prefer includes blossoms of the African tulip tree, nuts of the areca palm, cones of Australian pines, seeds of the Australian silk oak, seeds of bischofia trees, bottle brush flowers, Brazilian pepper fruits, developing coconuts, mangoes, sea grapes, flowers of orchid trees, acorns and fruit from the strangler fig. With such a thorough background, she put together this very fine and inclusive book that all exotic bird lovers in Florida will want to have
to read and for future consulting.
COMMENTS: Susan Allene Epps was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and attended Louisiana State University. Afterward she moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she lived for seventeen years, and where she enjoyed scuba diving, competitive swimming, and, of course, bird watching — especially the parrots and parakeets found in south Florida. In 2005 she moved to the coast of Mississippi, Diamond Head, to be exact. Now working on Parrots of the United States, Epps has traveled to Arizona,
where she found love birds nesting, and Seattle, which has red-fronted conures.
