Superb, very rare, fine antique large antique 1891 map, titled at left hand side Map of the Environs of Petersburg, VA, From Appotmattox River, To Ft. Howard, Showing the Positions of the Intrenched Lines Occupied by the 9th Army Corps, A.P. During the Siege, Plat Showing the Position of the Army of the Tennessee, Under Command of Maj. Gen. O.O. Howard, During the Battle of Bentonville, NC March 20th and 21st 1865, in the middle are 2 superb detailed maps, one is a Winter Campaign in the Carolinas, 2 detailed maps in regards to that, and at right hand side Plan No 8, Siege Operations at Spanish Fort, Mobile Bay, more detailed text, above that, Maj. Gen HW Slocum and Kilpatrick's Cavalary in an Engagement Near Bentonville N.C. march 19th, 1865, and at upper right, Map of the Battlefield of Pea Ridge , Arkansas, more detailed text as well. The maps were produced by Julius Bien & Co, one of the finest lithographers of this period, for Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, the most important Civil War atlas ever produced, and very rare. Antique map dealers routinely ask $300 each for maps like this. I'm not saying they get it, but they certaily ask it! The maps are very very detailed, and quite attractively printed on fine paper, superb period lithography. The map has had a fine brown tape attached to the verso of the map, to bolster the edges, and also down the middle spine, verso. The only area where the light stain affects the map is the middle fold, so the 3 left hand side maps, and the 3 right maps are compeletly unaffected and could be framed alone, overall a fascianting, detailed and important map. The map is in nice conditon , tight and clean, not tears etc. The size is 18.5" by 29". Rare. Winning bidder pays $3.75 shipping domestic, more foreign.
