Publisher's Note
An acclaimed journalist unravels the mysteries of mummies by following the unusual and extraordinary women and men who devote their lives to studying them.
Perhaps the most eccentric of all scientific meetings, the World Congress on Mummy Studies brings together mummy experts from all over the world and airs their latest findings. Who are these scientists, and what draws them to this morbid yet captivating field? The Mummy Congress is the first book to examine not just the world of mummies, but the people obsessed with them.
The Mummy Congress takes readers on a journey over five continents and across nearly 7,000 years to reveal how mummies have been venerated as saints, fought over by politicians, collected as artistic treasures, analyzed for cures to ancient diseases, investigated for clues to drug use, and imitated by today's cosmetics and beauty industries. From the elaborately prepared child mummies of northern Chile to the preserved household pets of ancient Egypt, from the self-preservation regimens of 19th century Japanese monks to the new crop of mummification services now being hyped on the Internet, this astounding book shows what mummies and the people who study them can tell us about ourselves -- about our fears of mortality and our dreams of eternal life, about the lives of our ancestors and about the possibilities for future generations.

THE MUMMY CONGRESS by Heather Pringle is a study in science, obsession, and the everlasting dead.

When science journalist Heather Pringle was dispatched to a remote part of northern Chile ot cover a scientific conference, she found herself in the midst of the most passionate gathering of her working life...dozens of mummy experts lodged in a rambling seaside hotel, battling over the implications of their latest discoveries.

Infected by their mania, Pringle traveled around the globe the next year which led her to the lifelike remains of medieval saints entombed in Italy's grand cathedrals, eerily preserved bog bodies in the Netherlands bearing signs of violent and untimely slaughter, and frozen Inca princesses glimpsed for the first time atop icy mountains. She learned the skills of ancient Egyptian embalmers capable of preserving bodies "until the end of time"; of horrifying sacrifices made by ancient South Americans to pacify their gods; and of the weird mummified parasites, preserved in the guts of milennia-old bodies, that still wreak havoc across the world today.
