CALL ME CHARLIE, The Convenience Store Baron, by Charlie Nirenberg with George Mair is a 259-page hardcover book with dustjacket and is in good condition. Dj has shelfwear and edge rubbing with small tears. Also light discoloration on edges of inside flaps. Hardcover has very slight edge fading. Contents are clean and tightly bound. Slight buckle due to being stored in unheated room. Hardly noticeable.  Outsides of pages have a couple of small pencil marks, also light shelf soil on tops. Published by Convenient Publishing Company, First Edition 1992.

Charlie went into business at the age of 8 and became a successful ice cream peddler by age 14. From there on, he not only lived the life of Horatio Alger rising from rags to riches...he did it twice.

Charlie's family emigrated to a farm in Massachusetts wher Charlie first discovered his love for selling. Finishing high school and entering college, he got swept up in World War II and returned home in 1946 to enter the ice cream business. In time, he had 65 ice cream trucks selling in the neighborhoods along with his own ice cream plant.

In 1957 he opened a convenience store and closed it a year later due to failing sales. Learning from failure, he opened 2 more Dairy Mart stores and grew to a chain of 37 stores by 1972. At that point, he sold out to Giant Stores and became an over-night paper millionaire. The next year Giant went bankrupt and Charlie became what he called "a paper pauper." He fought to get his Dairy Mart stores back, succeeded and expanded including building a $2.6 million dairy plant in Enfield, Connecticut. Before Charlie was done expanding, the Dairy Mart chain had over 1,200 stores.

This book tells of Charlie's colorful experiences and lessons learned about a life that has taken him from juvenile peddler to multi-million dollar business success.
