Hand written note on fly leaf reads: "The book was taken from the ruins of Hampton, Va. By a member of the 16th Mass. Vols. Hampton is one of the sad spectacles of devastation of the unholy rebellion- William J. Sleries (? ) Hampton. Va. Camp Hamilton, Va. George S. Evans- Sergeant Major, 16 Mass. Vols. March 14, 1867. Folio. Historical provenance. Frontispiece is protected with rice paper. Full leather cover is worn, particularly at edges, caps and corners. Tearing at hinges.
