The story of Hanukkah dates back more than 2,000 year ago, to the land of Judea, where the Jewish people were being ruled by Greek kings. One particularly brutal king was Antiochus, who forced the Jews to turn their backs on their monotheistic faith and worship instead the Greek gods.

The festival of Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah) was established to commemorate the Jewish Maccabees' military victory over the Greek-Syrians and the rededication of the Second Temple which had been desecrated by the Greek-Syrians, to the worship of God.

In short, in response to religious persecution and oppression, Judah Maccabee and his four brothers organized a group of resistance fighters known as the Maccabees.  The Maccabees miraculously succeeded to drive the far larger Greek-Syrian army out of Judea.

On the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev in the year 165 BCE, they reclaimed their Holy Temple in Jerusalem, which had been defiled and wanted to rededicate this holy structure by relighting the Temple's menorah.  Tradition teaches that the single days worth of pure oil found in the Temple miraculously burnt for eight days until more pure oil could be brought. In commemoration of these miracles, a Hanukkah menorah, also called a Hanukiah, is lit during each of the eight nights of Hanukkah.  The name Hanukkah means to rededicate in Hebrew.

A menorah is a candle stand with nine branches. Usually eight candles - one for each day of Hanukka - are of the same height, with a taller one in the middle or on the end, the shamash ("servant"), which is used to light the others.  One candle is lit the first night, and an additional candle is lit each successive night with a special blessing said. Thus, on the last night of Hanukkah, all eight candles of the Menorah are lit. All the eight candles are lit from left to right and the 9 candle known as known as the Shamash is lit at last.

Lighting the Hanukkah menorah is the central observance of the festival. The candles should be lit by a window or door in order to fulfill the commandment to "publicize the miracle."

Regular standard or house flags measure approximately 28 inches wide by 40 inches long.  They are perfect for flying from the upper story of a house or business.

Garden flags are approximately 12.5 inches wide by 18 inches long.  These flags are smaller and are ideal near doorways, gates, walkways, lining driveways or in windows.  The display rod can also be slipped into a large flower pot. With a decorative iron arm bracket, you can hang one from the post that holds your mailbox, place a pair to either side of the stairs, or mount them as a series of along the edge of a fence.

The essential support elements of home flag displaying are poles, brackets and stands.  You can even get a bar and suction cup mounting that will allow you to move them indoors for hanging in a window.

The pole is an important part of displaying your flags. The recommended poles for house flags are 6 to 8 feet long with an anti-wrap sleeve. The choices for material used for the pole are wood, fiber glass and metal.

The right bracket helps it to display the flag in the right manner.  There are many styles of brackets that you can buy to fasten to the side of your house, garage, business or even the fence. They can be adjusted for angle, and are generally constructed of material that will allow your flags to fly year round, no matter what the weather.

The standard position for decorative flags is a 45 degree angle, however hanging them more like a banner, horizontally allows for a greater display, since they will often hang straight down. A basic bracket will screw into the surface of a wall.  For the most flexibility, get a bracket that has an adjustable feature, which will allow you to position it exactly as you want.
