Synopsis
A financial journalist asserts that President George W. Bush has politicized the issue of Social Security, undermined public confidence by falsely claiming a crisis, hijacked the debate by repeatedly proposing "reform," and divided the nation by pitting younger workers against baby boomers. Most seriously, says Michael Hiltzik, Bush's plan for privatizing the system will cause a great deal of harm. Addressing social security's most vulnerable aspect, confusion by the general public, Hiltzik explains how social security works and provides a history of its origins, noting that it came under attack from the right almost immediately upon its implementation. He also recounts President Reagan's drumbeat of criticism. Hiltzik acknowledges that some fixes are needed as one goes along, and he proposes several. But he eschews scare tactics, and favors reason over risk.
