Convenient, effective and easy to use Speech may be routed to the individual’s ears via high-fidelity noise isolating earphones or interfaced with a hearing instrument or cochlear implant with a neckloop or induction earhook. The Companion Mics system establishes a direct communication line between the talkers’ microphones and the listener’s receiver, bypassing the noise and reverberation of most large rooms. The microphones reduce noise by 10-to-one, making it easier for listeners to focus on and understand conversations with their companions. All Companion Mics users wear around their necks compact pendants about the size of a mini iPod player; the listener attaches comfortable Etymotic noise-isolating earphones to tune in to up to three people speaking, simultaneously. Indoors, the suggested operating distance is 15 to 20 feet; under line-of-sight conditions outdoors, the units might operate over greater distances. The Companion Mics system, the result of 14 years of development by the sound and hearing experts at Etymotic Research, is based on an innovative wireless noise reduction technology. Similar to the technology used by digital cordless phones, the Etymotic technology uses a frequency-hopping technique that jumps quickly from frequency to frequency to avoid interference from other devices on the 2.4 GHz band (e.g., digital cordless phones, microwave ovens, or other Companion Mics systems in the area). Ten or more sets of Companion Mics systems can operate in the same room with little audible interference. With the Companion Mics system, those who have been excluded from conversation in noisy places can enjoy social situations and fully participate again.
The microphones in this system give up to a ten-to-one decrease in the relative noise level that is heard by the listener, which makes it possible to carry on a normal conversation even in high levels of background noise. The units use lithium polymer rechargeable batteries. Battery life is 10-13 hours, which gives ample use time for most applications. A complete charge takes 2-3 hours. To conserve battery life, the system automatically times out and turns off after a period of inactivity. Performance Characteristics:
