The three-disc/one-DVD collection DEAD CAN DANCE 1981-1998 is an impressive overview of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry's metamorphosis from goth-rockers into a unique act that fused post-punk, ambient, and world-music influences. Moving chronologically, the material here ranges from 1981's "Frontier" (from the 1987 4AD compilation LONELY IS AN EYESORE) to the previously unreleased final recording "The Lotus Eaters." The nearly four-hour set adds a John Peel session from 1983, rare compilation appearances, and previously unreleased studio and live tracks to a balanced sampling of songs from all of the duo's albums. As a result, it's easy and satisfying to chart the band's evolution from the doomy, Birthday Party-like grind of their initial Peel session to the classical-inspired instrumental elegance of the epic "The Protagonist" to the increasingly ethereal Celtic- and African-influenced ambient beauty of the pair's '90s work. The DVD includes TOWARD THE WITHIN, a live performance documentary from Dead Can Dance's 1994 tour, and all five of the group's promo videos.
