Books: A bound set of 3 volumes of 12 Japanese Fairy Tales illustrated with Japanese woodblock prints, First Editions. This Fairy Tales printed on fine crepe paper and illustrated with actual woodcuts. The publisher is Kobunsha, Hasegawa in Tokyo - as stated at the end of each volume in woodcut, the covers of each tale state Griffin and Farran in London and Sydney, ( ..Griffin and Farran bound these with sheets/woodcuts printed by Kobunsha in Japan and was the seller in the West....). The Fairy Tales are issued circa the late 1800s, around 1880-1890s, and are contained in publisher's European cloth binding with gilt titles. The Fairy Tales (vol. II, III and IV) include:  Kachi Kachi Mountain (no. 5), The Mouse's Wedding (no. 6), The Old Man and the Devils (no. 7), The Fisher Boy Urashima (no.8), The Serpent With Eight heads (no. 9), The Matsuyama Mirror (no. 10), The Hare of Inaba (no.11), The Cub's Trumph (no.12), The Silly Jellyfish (no.13), The Princes Fire-Flash and Fire-Fade (no. 14), My Lord Bag o' Rice (no.15), The Wooden Bowl (no. 16).  Book condition:  Externally, considerable sunning and fading to cloth at edges, spines quite darkened, cloth very worn at spines right through to the boards, gilt on spine labels faded. Bindings quite worn. Internally, a very lovely, very clean and bright set. Small previous owner's name in faded ink, barely seen in the very upper corner of the gray front free endpapers. Beyond the endpapers, The Fairy Tales are in excellent condition for age, slight even typical expected yellowing, not detracting and commensurate with age of approximately 120 years, a few sheets with original light folds - which occur during binding, all stated for the sake of accuracy, wonderful vivid colours of the woodcuts, excellent impression with clear line work and detail, no detracting marks or writing whatsoever. Contents in very good condition. Guaranteed to please a lover of Japanese Fairy Tales and Japanese woodblocks - and would make a very memorable treat for a special person. A very charming edition, from the late 1800s, wonderful woodblock illustrations. A great read. Enjoy!
