Honky Tonk Girl 3 CD boxed set is the definitive Loretta Lynn career retrospective. All the hits are here, plus rarities and overlooked tracks, and the three CDs are sequenced more or less chronologically, from her self-promoted 1960 breakthrough Honky Tonk Girl (recorded, in mono, under somewhat primitive conditions) to 1987's Who Was That Stranger (state-of-the-art digital), with Lynn's undiminished vocal powers supplying the continuity.

Disc one covers Loretta's formative years (1960 - 1966) under the guidance of top producer Owen Bradley.  Loretta's early records at Decca were very much in the traditional female country vein. The second disc showcases Lynn at her commercial and artistic peak (1967 - 1971).  Loretta wrote most of her hits during this period and no subject appears to have been off-limits. Fist City finds Loretta willing to get physical to keep her man while Rated X discusses the stigma placed on divorced on women.  Coal Miner's Daughter which has become Loretta's signature song and spawned an autobiographical book and film.  Disc three covers Loretta's later years with Decca and its parent company MCA. With 1972's controversial The Pill, Loretta stopped writing her own material. Her musical stylings expanded as well.  In addition to Lynn's solo recordings, duet hits with Ernest Tubb and Conway Twitty are sprinkled throughout the set.
