The Signifer of the 11th Roman legion " Claudias "

It's one of items of a numerous collection of tin warriors of various epoch. If you need some identical figurines please e-mail to me and we can make it!

A signifer was a standard bearer of the Roman legions. He carried a signum (standard) for a cohort or century. The signum he carried was the military emblem of that unit. It was composed of a number of philarae (disks), along with a number of other elements mounted on a pole, topped with a leaf-shaped spear head or a manus (human hand) image. It sometimes included a representation of a wreath, probably denoting an honor or award.
In the Roman Republic the term signifer probably applied to all standard bearers, but in the Empire the signifer was just one of a number of types of signiferi, which also included aquilifers, imaginifers, duplicarii, vexillarii and draconarii. Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis (faithful and loyal Claudian legion) was a Roman legion. XI Claudia dates back to the two legions (the other was the XIIth) recruited by Julius Caesar to invade Gallia in 58 BC, and it existed at least until early 5th century, guarding lower Danube in Durostorum (modern Silistra, Bulgaria). The emblem of this legion is not recorded; it could have been, as well as of all Caesar's legions, the bull, possibly the she-wolf lactating the twins.
