This beautiful cupro nickel coin is one issue in the stunning new four coin collection released by the Bank of Sierra Leone, featuring a selection of the amazing animals that live on the plains and in the forests of Africa.  We carry all four of these cupro nickel animal coins at our eBay Store .

 

The world's species are facing their biggest crisis since the age of the dinosaurs. Threats from pollution, habitat destruction and climate change are so severe that a recent UN report says 25 per cent of the world's mammals face extinction within 25 years.  The Sierra Leone Government is party to environmental agreements to aid endangered species.

This particular issue features The Hippo, which spends most of its day sleeping or resting in or near the water.  When threatened, The Hippo will move deep into the water or reed beds where it can lie unobserved with only its nostrils and eyelids above the surface of the water.

The other side shows the Coat of arms of Sierra Leone.
