 The Bank of Sierra Leone has approved the release of this outstanding new legal tender coin to honour one of the World’s most famous and revered artists in the year that marks the 500th Anniversary of one of his most well known creations – The Mona Lisa.

Leonardo Da Vinci was born on the 14th April 1452 in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near Florence and during his life became one of the great masters of the High Renaissance, who was also celebrated as a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. His innovations in the field of painting influenced the course of Italian art for more than a century after his death, and his scientific studies - particularly in the fields of anatomy, optics, and hydraulics - anticipated many of the developments of modern science.

The Mona Lisa is certainly not the only artwork that Leonardo Da Vinci is remembered for. This spectacular coin shows images of his other masterpieces – The Last Supper is shown in the surround with the Vitruvian Man depicted in the centre and throughout the design there are other references to his much loved work. The hands of the Mona Lisa are shown below the Vitruvian Man, the upward pointing hand to the left of the design is from the painting of John the Baptist, the hands to the right and above the Vitruvian Man are from the painting of the Virgin of the Rocks (The second version was completed in 1506) and even the blackberries and the oak leaves are taken from Leonardo Da Vinci’s drawings. Leonardo’s signature is also shown within the design written backwards and forwards in the mirror-writing style that Leonardo adopted.
