A gripping tale of desire, duplicity and double-crossing rooted in a
hard-boiled cynicism and nihilism, the film is noted for a brilliant
robbery sequence shot in one unbroken take, and for its harrowing
portrayal of one man’s struggle with inevitable death.

Acclaimed director Robert Siodmak (The Suspect) uses an insurance
investigator to search behind the grimy façade of murder in a suspense
masterpiece that earned four Oscar® nominations and made the careers of
the young Lancaster and Gardner.
