After the Alaska purchase, Secretary of State Seward retired from public life and spent 2 years traveling around the world. His journal of the travels was edited by his adopted daughter. He crossed the US, stopping in Utah and California, then sailed to Japan and China, India, Palestine, Europe, then home to NY. In six parts: United States, Canada, and Pacific Ocean; Japan, China, and Cochin China; The Easter Archipelago, Straits of Malacca, and Ceylon; British India; Egypt and Palestine; Europe. Considered one of the best travel books of the late 19th c.
CONDITION: Good Plus. Front hinge cracked, but binding still solid. Frontis and title page heavily foxed, other pages with sporadic light foxing. Inked name on endpaper. Folding map creased and chipped in margin, small chip to margin of page in index. Wear to extremities. Presentable copy.
