ANTIQUE TRAIN ADVENTURES,
Victorian bindings
1) Herbert E. Hamblen. THE GENERAL MANAGER'S STORY: Old-Time Reminiscences of Railroading in the United States. New York: Macmillan, 1898. First Edition. Wonderful for its content, this copy nevertheless has several faults: some discoloring around the edge of the front board (not much afflicting the illustration of two men inside locomotive), and cracked hinges. Tissued frontispiece and numerous equally thrilling inserted plates. Each chapter is another tale of adventure, presumed factual, of the early days of American trains. And how odd to think that even in 1898 this was about the old days. Even worn copies catalog $30 to $45; fine copies would be at least twice as much.
2) Paul Leicester Ford. THE GREAT K & A TRAIN ROBBERY. New York: Dodd Mead, 1897. First Edition Second State (the first state has an error on the title page, leaving out the word "Train" from the title; the present specimen is corrected). Lightly soiled but mostly Very Good decorative binding showing front of locomotive. Thrilling frontispiece. A classic action-crime novel of the old west. The corrected 2nd state catalogs $85 or even more, though it can be found in the $35 to $55 range in pretty decent condition.
Estimated value: $65 to $135
