WHAT IF IT'S YOU features a warmer and much lighter-handed production than most of this country superstar's previous albums. McEntire co-produced it herself, and recorded with her touring band rather than the usual studio musicians, adding to a sense of intimacy and richness.
With its strong woman's narrative voice, "How Was I To Know" sets the tone of an album that abounds with courageous, spirited female characters. McEntire's lighthearted side shines on songs like "I'd Rather Ride Around With You," the feel-good story of a bridesmaid who runs out on her friend's wedding for a joyride with a guy; even in that carefree context, the theme of independence is clear. There is a sense of lightness and joy throughout WHAT IF IT'S YOU; what's absent, even from the ballads, are the heaviness and overwhelming drama of McEntire's recent releases.
