This is a stunning piece....it is an original Rookwood 1883 Vase...I am told it is missing a lid, I don't see it, as it looks like a beautiful vase to me especially with the age. I contacted people far smarter then me about this piece...I am told it is an early piece of Rookwood Slip Glaze....This piece was deaccessioned from the Cincinnati Art Museum and said...It’s the kind of piece Nichols used to do and not sign; she was only there from 1880-1890 or so... Nichols was the founder of Rookwood”. It was also referred to it as "early Limoges vase painted in Barbotine". It is a large piece at 8 3/8" Tall and 22" around the widest part of the vase. The painted decoration is gorgeous multi-colored large blossoms. It could possibly be Valentien as he also experimented with this early barbotine method and the design resembles several pieces of both artists. It is fully marked on the base with Embossed Rookwood (they did not use the flame mark until 3-4 years later), and also the year 1883. It also has numbers which I assume are design numbers. It is in Excellent condition with NO chips, cracks or problems. Their is minimal lite crazing but nothing to deter from this magical piece. Collectors please send any addl' info and I will add it. Email any questions or for addl' photos. ***I have a written appraisal and will gladly share it with serious inquiries. My opening bid is well below the retail price and even below the wholesale price. |
