In the Edith Wharton adaptation THE HOUSE OF MIRTH, Gillian Anderson is Lily Bart, a strikingly beautiful and socially prominent 1905 woman who nonetheless remains unmarried at the late age of 29. Lily is conflicted between her desire to marry a wealthy man and her love for another, who's handsome and elegant but decidedly poor.
