| | Album notes | Chapel Hill, North Carolina, is the home of the University of North Carolina, where the campus radio station is famous for its idiosyncratic, wonderfully inconsistent playlist. Jennyanykind reflects this eccentricity in its music which, while rooted in breezy, country-esque rock, unpredictably incorporates everything from blues to jazz flourishes in a pattern distinctly its own. By its sixth effort, I NEED YOU, the collective led by songwriting brothers Michael and Mark Holland toned the energy down a bit and found just the right level of pop for its organic roots-rock sound. I NEED YOU starts in a rousing, '60s psychedelic manner with the rollickingly catchy, upbeat "Up Early in the Morning" and "We Can Be Happy." However, the mood switches to a Stones-like barroom snarl on songs such as "Young Boy Blues," and the bluesy epic "It's a Wicked World." In fact, a perfect undertone of raucous rock rebellion flavors this entire fitful, fanciful record, the vague scent of sawdust and beer permeating a pretty pop album. I NEED YOU continues Jennyanykind's commitment to the Chapel Hill tradition of gritty, unique music.
| | Editorial reviews | 3 stars out of 5 - ...Offers a dark, hypnotic brand of lo-fi rootsiness....betraying a clear debt to old blues, but off-kilter surprises...create a modern ambience and tension... Q (08/01/2000)
...An eccentric blend of Southern blues and cool, blithe pop....both hummable and memorable....Proving, in spades, hat they can still kick up the rock'n'roll dust... CMJ (04/24/2000)
