| | Album notes | Personnel: Janis Ian (vocals, various instruments); Harry Stinson, Jim Photoglo, Vince Melamed (vocals); Viktor Krauss (National guitar, double bass); Carson Whitsett (organ); Jim Brock (drums, percussion). Recording information: Masterlink, Nashville, TN. On 2006's FOLK IS THE NEW BLACK, veteran singer/songwriter Janis Ian works in a spare, acoustic context, ably backed by a band that includes bassist Viktor Krauss (the brother of bluegrass star Alison Krauss). Ian's gentle folk melodies accompany romantic songs such as the bluesy "Standing in the Shadows of Love" (not to be confused with the Motown classic), but they also counterbalance the blunt social and political statements of songs like the anti-censorship tune "Danger Danger" and the ad-busting title track. Produced by Ian herself, this laid-back, no-frills album proves that the revered folk-pop artist is still in fine voice and a provocative state of mind, even decades after her 1970s heyday.
| | Editorial reviews | 3 stars out of 5 -- Her clear and unfussy guitar playing is given subtle texture by a three-man back-up band... Uncut
4 stars out of 5 -- [I]t's protest again, acoustic, spontaneous, leavened with love songs of the heart-tug kind and not a little in the way of humour. Mojo
