Gr 4-6 A quick read for girls that offers tips on self-esteem in a fairly believable format. Camy, a sixth grader at Peoria Middle School, has recently moved from Beverly Hills, California to Illinois. As a veteran of "one of the toughest schools in the country in terms of making friends," she wants to share her knowledge with other kids her age. She starts off by introducing several of her closest pals and then outlines 30 rules for making friends, as well as for being a good friend. She covers common-sense ideas such as "try to have a varied group of friends" or "...don't fight over boys" while maintaining the young-girl/best-friend voice. In outlining the best ways to meet friends, Camy states, "Try to be direct and honest and real. If you're a straight-A student, tell the girls you're really into school and what your favorite subject is." At times, the narrator seems older than a sixth grader and can be a little preachy, but that never overwhelms the text.
