Loosely--very loosely at times--based on Graham Greene's novel THE END OF THE AFFAIR, the Golden Palominos' 1993 album THIS IS HOW IT FEELS introduces yet another new singer and new sound for Anton Fier's ever-shifting band. Lori Carson's throaty whisper of a voice is a compelling instrument, and the inclusion of one song, a cover of Jackson Browne's "These Days," featuring former singer Amanda Kramer, shows how much more suited Carson is for the job. The new sound pretty much abandons the Hoboken-style jangle-pop of the previous few Golden Palominos albums in favor of a sleek and sophisticated mix of trip-hop beats, jazz-inflected solos and mournfully romantic lyrics. The single "Prison of the Rhythm," also available in an often-fascinating remix EP, is the highlight, but this probably the most solidly satisfying of all of the Golden Palominos albums.
