About Antler:
Antler has been in the luxury travel luggage and holiday luggage business for over 80 years, with the company origins going back even further.
It was in the 1870's that founder, J. Boultbee Brooks, first travelled the cobbled streets of the Midlands selling leather goods from a horse and cart, and in one way at least, it was the horse's demise that shaped the destiny of the company. In the interest of progress, Boultbee replaced her with a new-fangled 'safety bicycle'. Unfortunately the bike's wooden saddle and solid tyres combining with the cobbled streets caused him no little discomfort, and so to protect his extremities he invented an entirely new kind of saddle made from leather and sprung steel. And thus the famous Brook's saddle was born. It wasn't long before it became a worldwide success, soon joined by saddlebags and panniers.
Boultbee's business never looked back and in 1920 his son entered the luggage market proper, with leather covered wardrobe trunks for ocean liners, and as the automobile grew in popularity, with 'motor trunks' which you strapped to the back of your car. Being keenly interested in wildlife, he had no difficulty in finding a suitable brand name and symbol, hence the stag's head and Antler. A few years later came another major milestone, when in 1930 Antler launched the first ever lightweight, soft-top suitcase, covered either in patent leather or the then extremely innovatory 'Rexine' coated cotton fabric. It was another success and legend has it that a leading London store bought up the whole of the first consignment, which sold in a day.
War brought an inevitable change of emphasis and Antler turned briefly to producing haversacks, webbing belts and similar military equipment for the armed forces, But in the late 1940's it came back into the luggage business again, concentrating on the new soft-sided luggage, with rich linings and up to the minute fabrics like 'lizard skin' Vynide, and pioneering ever more new materials. After the war in the 1950's and 1960's as the Travel Industry expanded and the start of mass tourism began Antler was are the forefront with technical innovations in Holiday Luggage to meet the demands of customers for products suitable for the new age of air travel. A best seller of this era was 'Airstream' a combination soft/hard suitcase, which was an early precursor of this concept.
The company relocated in 1962, under the new ownership of the Harrison Sheldon Group, from the original Midlands base, to the current head office site in North Manchester with additional manufacturing sites in Mosley, Littleborough and Exeter meeting the ever growing demand. At the same time the famous 'Brexton Hampers' joined the product portfolio. The 1980's b rought a sea change in soft luggage from the earlier PVC based products to the much stronger Polyester type exemplified by the high profile luxury luggage ranges, with celebrity endorsed collections like the signature Litchfield range.
The 1990's saw the company's entry into the hard luggage and suitcase market with ever increasing success and the introduction of leather goods extended the brand further. Antler led the field with technological design revolutions with rollercase luggage, radically changing the shape of the suitcases forever plus new markets were developed with export growth worldwide and the birth of the Retail Division.
Three key principles have guided the vision and development of the Company from the earliest days of Boultbee Brooks, Quality, Innovation & Style. This remains the hallmarks for which Antler Luggage today.
