This version of the Mexico 66 celebrates the year of the horse with an all-over print with embroidered accents. There is even a mane of faux fur on the heel tab. Also notice that one side is black with silver print and the other is grey with a black print. Onitsuka Tiger™ is commemorating it's 60th year by introducing shoes inspired by the Japanese Zodiac calendar.
In true Japanese style, to honor its 60th birthday, OT has created a unique collection, inspired by the animals of the Zodiac and the five earth elements.
Why all the fuss? Well, in Japan beeing 60 isn't 'just onother birthday', it's an event of major cultural significance that is laden with symbolism. Peaple turning 60 are honoured, celebrating having lived a complete 60-year 'cycle of life'.
The Japanese Zodiac calendar is an ancient system originally devised as a method of measuring time, as well as defining a person's characteristics and its 60 year cycle continiues to this day.
The legend of Zodiac lives on through OT's unique fusion of Japanese heritage and contemporary design, and plays a major role in 2009's compleate collection of shoes, apparel and accessories.
The first half of the collection (Spring Summer) really brings the anniversary celebrations to life and features six animal designs; three created by Takeshi Fukui and three by Erik Kriek.
The autumn collection continues the story of the Zodiac with the remaining six Zodiac animals.
