Thangkas,
also called Tangkas or Tankas, are a form of fine art from
Buddhist Tibet, the “roof of the world”.
Tibet, once isolated and relatively inaccessible because
of its location high in the Himalayas, is now a part of the
People’s Republic of China. Tibetan
culture is undergoing a period of great change.
As a unique mixture of Indus Valley and Chinese
influences, Tibetan culture has long been shrouded in mystique
and secrecy. The
Tibet of old was the cultural and religious epicenter of
Buddhism, under the Dalai Lama and generations of monastic
governance. The new
Tibet is moving into the modern era under the Chinese
government. As with
any change, some things are lost and some things are gained.
The
Thangkas that we offer in our ebay store are vestiges of the old
Buddhist Tibet. While
some Tibetans are still practicing the craft of Thangka
painting, fewer and fewer Thangkas are being produced today than
before. Thangka
painting requires mental and artistic discipline that modern
artists typically shun. Most
Thangkas were painted according to strict Buddhist principles
and iconography established centuries ago, allowing artists very
little individual freedom of expression.
Most older Thangkas were also created under the direction
of Buddhist monks or religious leaders for specific religious
purposes, not for commercial use or sale to the general public.
Now that Tibet is rapidly modernizing, Thangka painting
is truly a dying art. If
you purchase an older Thangka, you should cherish and protect it
because the time may soon come when there simply won’t be any
more available on the open market.
Thangkas are made to be rolled up for storage, and
unrolled much like a Chinese scroll painting, for worship and
display. The
Thangkas that we offer were all collected
from Buddhist temples, monasteries, and family shrines in
Tibet. They are not
copies from outside Tibet.
You may notice similarities between some Thangkas that
were painted by the same artist that we collected in one village
or from one monastery. Along
with Buddhist themes and symbolism, our Thangkas usually portray
specific Tibetan historic events and folklore.
As Tibetan Encyclopedias that could be moved from village
to village to educate the public, each Thangka tells a story. Please note that if you purchase multiple items from our store, we offer combined shippi to save you
money.
